It can optionally run OpenWRT[1], DD-WRT[2], and other third party 
firmware, but for basic needs you may find the stock firmware works just 
fine.

Actually several years back they cost reduced the model you'll find 
locally in retail stores so that it has less capable hardware and runs a 
different OS. If you want the capability to "upgrade" to a third party 
firmware, you need to get the Linux version, which is WRT54GL. You'll 
rarely find them on sale, but occasionally Buy.com discounts them.
