I am working on a quote for a cluster, including a GigE switch.

I have Belden IBDN AX350064 Gigaflex patch cables in hand. Would this cable
be
suitable, or is there better Ethernet cable I should use for a GigE cluster?

I've priced a Dell PowerConnect 2724 switch.

Thanks for insight.

Scott

Any CAT5E patch cable should be fine (I'm not sure you can even find
CAT5 cables anymore). I've worked with companies with 5000+ copper GB
patch cables, and haven't seen any buy a special or extra expensive
cable (well other than X-over cables). For my own network, I have zero
errors on any GB copper port with the last clear counters having been
380 days ago using CAT5E patch cables. You can get really cheap CAT5E
patch cables from Graybar, who has a warehouse near the Boston Herald on
Harrison Ave (South End / Chinatown area). With a corporate account
they can get as cheap as $1.95 a cable.

As far as I know, 10GB links are all fiber.

Thanks,
Nick

Make sure the XO cables are a different color! (horror story omitted...)

I think CX4 cables are copper, but not UTP. HP calls them "twinax".
Anyway, quite specialized. CX4 connector (NOT rj45) and 15M max len.

That's right. CX4s are copper, and they look totally different from RJ45.
They are roughly the size and shape of a VGA cable, but there's a flat
tongue with contacts on it that runs down the middle of the connector
where the middle row of pins would be on VGA. Here's a picture:

BBLISA now has a LinkedIn group. (If you're not familiar, LinkedIn is
a social networking site for professionals.)

Your direct LinkedIn network is supposed to consist of people that
you've worked with before and can vouch for. In contrast, user group
connections are like 2nd level contacts (people you know through other
people). So networking via a user group broadens your network without
violating that principle.

To join, go to:
http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/45411/0F3ACD5E5B0A

No one is pre-approved (which would have required uploading everyone's
email address to LinkedIn), so you'll be told you have to wait for the
group manager to approve your request. You don't have to do anything
further - your request will be approved within a few days.

I use my Ubuntu Gutsy box for three main things - email via ssh, email via
web,
and preserving my cassette music collection via Audacity. Everything has
been
working flawlessly, until tonight. I'd last successfully recorded stuff
two
nights ago (Sunday), most of the day.

But today, when I turned on my system, audacity didn't show the normal
device
it wants to record from (line 1). When I told it to record, it claimed the
device was in use. After a couple rounds of broken record attempts did I
realize the device options were not listed.

I visited Edit > Preferences and discovered the playback and record
drop-down
lists were non-functional.

I visited System > Preferences > Sound and tested audio. It worked fine.

What happened to audacity? Did some apt-get or aptitude update package
break
something from Sunday night, the last time I think I may have updated stuff?

I tried an aptitude reinstall audacity, and did an rm -rf ~/.audacity-data,
but
nothing helps.

What happened?

Thanks.

I was reminded of lsof (as root to show more), a tool I've never really
used, but knew of.

That found pulseaudio. Once removed, and with a reboot, sound is back.
