Company: Ask.com
Job Title: Senior Linux Systems Administrator
Description: Description:

Join a team of talented IT professionals who manage the core of the
Ask.com search clusters. We are the people who make sure that
www.ask.com and other sites using our search technology have relevant
and fast search results. Search has become the foundation of the
Internet, and Ask.com is at the heart of the action. Our technology uses
tens of thousands of Linux servers, which provide searchers access to
billions of Internet URLs. The Search Operations team is responsible for
designing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining these servers.

This position will have you working with different groups throughout the
US and throughout the world. This means excellent communications skills
and the ability to work across time zones and geographic boundaries are
a must. While excellent technical ability is required, this is more
about a certain mindset. You must have a commitment to customer
satisfaction, the ability to work autonomously with limited supervision,
and the operations outlook needed to maintain a 24x7 facility.

On a day-to-day basis you will lead in the deployment of new server
types, develop and deploy improvements to the systems management
infrastructure, respond to help desk tickets opened by internal
customers, perform hardware and software troubleshooting, follow
established routines and procedures for diagnostics and repair, and
escalate issues when necessary. You will be responsible for the
equipment at the heart of our search engine.

You will act as a member of the systems administration team. Your
mentoring and guidance will define how Ask.com tackles the systems
management challenges of the future. You are a natural talent when it
comes to Unix/Linux administration, and you have several years of
experience working with the Debian distribution(s) and administering a
large-scale Unix environment.

Minimum Requirements:
* Knowledge of PC hardware
* Extensive knowledge of Unix
* Extensive knowledge of Linux kernel (specifically the Debian
Distributions)
* Thorough understanding of DHCP, DNS, NIS, LDAP, NFS
* Understanding of automated OS installation systems (e.g. FAI,
Kickstart)
* Familiar with IP networking (layer 2&3 switching, ARP, STP, OSFP,
multicast)
* Familiar with management/monitoring software such as Nagios, Ganglia,
etc
* Skill with at least one high level scripting language (Perl, python,
shell, awk)
* Willingness to work in an on-call rotation and perform occasional
after-hours maintenance
* Excellent customer service skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Mentoring and Training skills
* Ability to quickly learn new technologies
* Strong organizational skills. (With this many machines, keeping track
of inventory is critical)
* Perform Tier 3+ support duties. Willingness to get "hands dirty"

Desirable Experience:
* Minimum 7 years experience with Unix (Linux, Solaris, BSD)
* Minimum 5 years networking experience (IP, Ethernet, routers,
switches, etc.)
* Previous experience with Veritas NetBackup, Nagios, NFS, NIS, or
similar technologies
* Knowledge of web applications, and how they function
* Previous experience designing, implementing and maintaining SQL
databases (MySQL)
* Knowledge of Scripting or programming ability (bash, Perl, Python,
etc.)

Position located in Bedford, MA but can function remotely worldwide.
