DIRECTORY ENGINEER - University Information Technology

The University Systems Group (USG) provides enterprise-wide information 
technology services, including electronic mail, web, directory, 
identity, and other UNIX/Linux-based services, to the Tufts community. 
Its members support and enhance existing services and infrastructure and 
develop new solutions in support of the evolving technology needs of the 
University. USG seeks an individual with mastery of directory technology 
and the ability to advocate for its advancement and use to both 
technical and non-technical audiences to fill its available Directory 
Engineer position.

The Directory Engineer will lead the ongoing support and development of 
the University’s LDAP, identity management, and provisioning 
infrastructures. This role involves close interaction with technical 
staff throughout the University to facilitate the design and integration 
of new systems, processes, and data. Specific responsibilities include:
•	Technical development, testing, documentation, and support of 
directory enabled middleware systems including authentication, 
authorization, and provisioning;
•	Technical development, testing, documentation, and support of 
directory services; integrating the directory with core business systems;
•	Project management of directory team, including technical staff and 
various technical and policy working group and committees;
•	Participation in University Systems Group architectural, strategic, 
and service design process;
•	Investigation of new middleware technologies and development of 
opportunities to utilize these technologies to optimize and facilitate 
University information technology services.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
1.	Bachelor´s degree
2.	Minimum of five years of progressive experience with identity 
management, system administration, or database administration
3.	Candidates should be comfortable using and administering UNIX/Linux 
systems and must have in-depth practical experience managing LDAP 
(preferably Netscape/iPlanet/Sun) and programming in a UNIX/Linux 
environment using scripting languages (e.g. Perl or Ruby) and/or 
compiled languages (Java or c)
4.	Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex problems and 
strong written and oral communication skills are required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with Active Directory. Use of LDAP 
for naming services (RFC 2307 schema, pam_ldap, etc.). Experience with 
metadirectory or provisioning packages. Web services (SOAP, WSDL, REST, 
etc.). mod_perl. Source code control (CVS or Subversion). Experience 
with monitoring programs such as Nagios

SPECIAL WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: Occasionally, evenings, weekends, 
early mornings, technical staff may be called upon to work on critical 
systems. Team members are included in an on-call rotation 7x24 for 
approximately one in seven weeks, supporting all issues that arise in 
the USG. Exact rotation frequency depends on staffing levels and 
accommodations of staff vacation requests, etc.
