Web Portal Engineer - Tufts University Systems Group

The University Systems Group (USG) is responsible for the architecture, 
installation, administration, and maintenance of host-based computing 
services that serve the University population as a whole, including 
electronic mail, directories, calendar, research computing and world 
wide web.

This Senior UNIX systems administrator position plays key role leading 
the effort to develop, deploy, maintain, and enhance the systems 
supporting a web portal for the University. Will support directory 
services and a range of Java Enterprise System (formerly SunONE) 
applications. Will assist with LDAP, directory, and related 
applications, as well as other Java Enterprise/SunONE applications. 
Project work includes: working closely with web and application 
developers, providing technical leadership in the design, building, and 
maintenance of a Tufts web portal and the supporting systems that 
provide identity and content management services; installing related 
software on pre-built Solaris systems; helping to train systems 
administrators, user support staff and others about the portal service; 
helping develop procedures and workflow in support of the portal, 
identity, and content management services.

Required Skills

Requires a minimum of five years of experience with UNIX system 
administration; Bachelor’s degree and seven years of experience 
preferred. Detailed knowledge of Solaris required with knowledge of 
additional UNIX environments strongly preferred. Must possess 
exceptional web engineering skills, including experience with JES/SunOne 
or iPlanet products and web portals, and be prepared to facilitate and 
provide technical leadership for portal-related issues within the 
central computing division. Strong communication skills to handle 
various demands such as written and verbal presentations for management, 
users and others are essential. Prior experience working with database 
administration staff is useful. Must have a strong demonstrated record 
of finding effective and innovative solutions to complex technical 
issues. Must be comfortable working alone and in groups. Strong project 
management and UNIX scripting skills are required. Previous experience 
with identity services strongly desired.
