The University Systems Group (USG) at Tufts University is responsible 
for the architecture, installation, administration, and maintenance of 
host-based computing services that serve the University population as a 
whole, including electronic mail, directories, calendar, research 
computing and world wide web.

This position manages the work of the Systems Administration staff by 
assigning tasks and projects and monitoring the quality and completeness 
of the work. Recruits, retains, and provides for the professional 
development of systems administration staff. Manages technology 
operating monies, and capital funds where appropriate. Coordinates, 
advances, and optimizes existing services and plan new services offered 
by University Systems by means of participation in Division working 
groups and University committees. Manages the resolution of service 
disruptions and problems escalated through Support Center, Systems and 
Operations staff. Consults with internal Tufts Computing and 
Communications Services (TCCS) customers and Tufts customers with 
respect to system needs. Participates in strategic planning for TCCS and 
for University initiatives. Advances technical and managerial skills and 
maintains technical currency through training and attendance at 
conferences and meetings.


Required Skills

The position requires extensive, hands on knowledge of Unix systems 
administration in large-scale deployments. Successful candidates will 
have a demonstrated ability to organize systems administrators into a 
coherent team able to accommodate growing demands and have a proven 
track record of progressive professional achievement accompanied by 
technical and service oriented innovations. Functioning as a key 
go-between technical and managerial audience, successful candidates will 
show the proven ability to communicate with both audiences to translate 
management goals into achievable technical objectives. Must be creative 
in generating solutions within the bounds of requirements and resources 
and still be able to introduce new concepts and techniques that may be 
disruptive to the status quo. Commitment to team-oriented behaviors and 
communication across the group and division is crucial.

Requires five to ten years of progressive, service-oriented experience 
in heterogeneous, Unix-oriented, Internet systems administration. 
Management, supervisory and budgetary experience is of critical 
importance. Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree preferred.
