Senior Research Computing Consultant, Harvard Medical School, Longwood Medical Area, Boston MA

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing group at the Harvard Medical School and have a major impact on the way information technology is delivered and research is done in a world class research institution. HMS Research Computing is the principal provider of High Performance Computing (HPC) services to the research community at Harvard Medical School. The group supports a cluster - with thousands of processor cores, terabytes of memory and petabytes of storage - and enables access to hundreds of applications for computational biology. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team and a contributor in building computational services in support of the research community.

The Senior Research Computing Consultant acts as a technical resource for HMS faculty and researchers, translating between scientific research needs and computing solutions. Meets with members of the research community, who often have data sets needing analysis, and understands their bioinformatics and computing requirements. Advises researchers on an appropriate pipeline. Helps researchers choose and parameterize software to implement the pipeline effectively in the HMS HPC environment. Writes scripts - wrappers, simple analysis, or data transformations - to answer the unique scientific questions researchers have, which are not answered by existing packages.  Provides support for next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, genomics, proteomics, simulation/modeling, and image analysis for high-content screening. Works with the Research Computing staff in the evaluation, integration and deployment of new technologies. Facilitates communication and problem-solving with researchers and other parts of IT. Participates in and helps coordinate training and outreach efforts.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in life science, computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience. Science research experience required. Minimum of 4 years of Linux and HPC experience. A demonstrable level of proficiency with Perl, Python, Unix/Linux shell scripting, R/Bioconductor and/or Matlab programming.

Additional Qualifications
Advanced degree in life science, computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics or engineering degree preferred. Experience using common tools and building workflows for a subset of: NGS, genomics, proteomics, simulation/modeling, and image analysis in HPC environment strongly preferred. Experience in parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI preferred. Experience with Cloud-based services such as AWS and Google Exacycle is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong ability to interact with an engaged and demanding user community. Ability to work collaboratively and share projects with other IT staff. Ability to learn new technologies quickly and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
