Job Description Broadcom is seeking an experienced Unix administrator to join a team of system administrators, all with the goal of supporting and optimizing a global Engineering Infrastructure. In this role, the primary focus will be on partnering with key Engineering client groups to ensure that the compute and storage infrastructure enables them to deliver complex technology products with a high level of efficiency. The environment is predominantly EDA-centric supporting chip development with a growing footprint of software product development. The employee will regularly assess performance, capacity, trends and overall alignment of the infrastructure environment to the needs of the engineering client community. The candidate should be a dedicated problem solver who can multi-task and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in addition to being able to effectively team with a wide variety of functional groups and individual personalities. Ongoing expectations include:
-- Seek out ways to provide enhancements to existing infrastructure. Coordinate changes to the environment around the schedule of engineers and engineering projects.
-- Work closely with other administrators around the globe to define and follow standards (all sites should look almost identical so that all administrators would be capable of participating in the support of every other site) and best practices for infrastructure design, testing, and implementation methodology. Document the environment.
-- Monitor, maintain, upgrade, and support Broadcom's global engineering infrastructure as required.
-- Collect and analyze data of all types for both problem resolution and effective collaboration.
-- Keep up with changes in the infrastructure technology market and seek ways to implement new capabilities.
Job Requirements        * Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
* 10+ years of UNIX system and network administration experience. Must have extensive Linux knowledge and experience.
* Experience in enterprise planning and architecture for NAS storage solutions
* Experience with EDA tools and environments strongly preferred.
* Out-of-the-box thinking...
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
o Must be capable to communicating clearly and accurately in English; Capable of training clients in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting succinctly with upper management. Good project management and time management skills with the capability to work with a global team of system administrators (implies occasional late night or early morning conferences to stay connected)
* Strong troubleshooting skills (system, network, and EDA application). Able to break down problems until root cause is understood.
* Independent problem-solving, and self-direction; Must be capable to taking general instruction, and executing desired result (implies both depth and breadth of knowledge).
* Comfortable with most aspects of operating system administration;
Examples:
o Configuration of major Unix components (network configuration, authentication parameters, process management, logging facilities, file systems management).
o System installation and configuration (Linux, Solaris, Citrix)
o Solid understanding of the security implications of network, system, and application components
o Installing third-party software.
* Has a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts (NFS, CIFS, automounter, inodes, filehandles).
* Has a solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts. All aspects of system and application environments depend on a robust network as the foundation layer. Ability to manage and troubleshoot network attached devices is a critical requirement (network attached storage, computing, authentication, and authorization).
* Ability to automate processes and write scripts in some administrative language (Tk, Perl, a shell).
* Ability to do minimal debugging and modification of C programs (get them to compile).
