description is REALLY long, but basically we need a strong, flexible
Linux sysadmin at Harvard Business Publishing (we product Harvard
Business Review, along with a bunch of other things you're less likely

Open position Senior Linux Systems Engineer

Harvard Business Publishing is an idea-driven company with a commitment
to improving the practice of management. We're a wholly owned subsidiary
of Harvard University serving customers across three primary markets:
educational institutions, corporations, and individual managers.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the IT Infrastructure & Hosting manager, the Senior Linux
Systems Engineer primary focus will be working with other members of the
IT Operations production team to customize and maintain the enterprise
Linux infrastructure, implement and support continuous integration tools
and processes, develop automation scripts, troubleshoot multiple
software and hardware systems, monitor and maintain the health of the
environments.

The Senior Linux Systems Engineer will provide hands on support to the
IT Operations production team responsible for supporting and
administering the enterprise global infrastructure environment
consisting of, but not limited to, Unix/Linux, Apache, JBoss/Tomcat,
Oracle, MySQL, Active Directory, MS Exchange, MS Windows, VMware,
NetApp, Cisco networking gear and UCS blades, Jira, Alfresco,
Informatica, Endeca etc.

The Senior Linux Systems Engineer will develop and support automated
tools used for building, deploying and integrating customer facing web
applications and enterprise custom applications (mostly Java and Apache
based applications). She/he will support and execute the deployment of
software releases in conjunction with HBP Business units and HBP
QA/Release team. Experience with build automation and deployment tools
in Linux environments is required.

She/he will work with the application owners to prepare operating
policies and run books for supported applications and help troubleshoot
the environments. The Senior Linux Systems Engineer will help implement
an improve monitoring of HBP systems and application using various tools
like Nagios, Cacti, Splunk, Awstats etc. and participate in the 24/7 on
call rotation with the rest of the IT Operations production team

As a part of the IT Operations production team, the Senior Linux Systems
Engineer will wear many hats to ensure maximum up-time for production,
test, and development environments. This position requires someone with
strong Linux skills, good written and verbal communication skills, the
ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced team environment and
excellent problem solving skills.

Core Responsibilities

The Senior Linux Systems Engineer will focus on:

Managing Harvard Business Publishing Linux infrastructure
Developing and enhancing build automation tools an processes
Automating and replacing error prone manual processes
Creating and tracking metrics that illustrate the work done by the IT
Operations production team
Maximizing systems up-time and operational efficiency within the IT
Operations production team
Helping monitor, support and troubleshoot customer-facing and internal
applications
Writing clear and complete documentation, including operational run
books, support procedures, etc...
Must be available to work some evening or weekends occasionally
Must be available to be part of the 24/7 on call rotation within the IT
Operations production team
Education/Experience Requirements:

M.S. or B.S. In Computer Science or related technical field
5+ years experience with Linux system administration

Required skills:

Expertise in Linux system administration
Strong scripting skills (Bash, Perl)
Experience automating the software build and deployment process
Experience assisting developers with build problems, new projects, and
general troubleshooting
Experience with application delivery, promoting releases of
application/infrastructure configuration
Experience with Apache web server and JBoss/Tomcat application server
Experience with Source Control systems (Subversion preferred)
Good knowledge of Networking fundamentals (IP, DHCP, DNS, routing,
cabling...)
Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate
effectively in meetings, email and informal discussions
Strong creative problem-solving skills

Desired skills:

Experience with Continuous Integration (Jenkins, Hudson, TeamCity,
CruiseControl a plus)
Experience working with automation software (Chef, CFengine, Puppet a plus)
Experience building/supporting cloud and virtual infrastructure or web
applications (VMware preferred)
Experience with Cisoc UCS
Experience with NetApp network attached storage
Experience working with Java-based projects a plus
Experience with databases administration a plus (MySQL, Oracle, MSSQL)
Experience with Windows Server environments a plus
