Reporting to the Manager of Research Computing, this new and challenging role will be responsible for the delivery of data storage and database services to the Broad community as well as the day-to-day operations of the physical infrastructure supporting those services. The successful candidate will bring a combination of technical, leadership and business skills and will play a key role in the success of the Institute's new internal service center delivering data storage as a service. The Broad generates enormous volumes of scientific data. The Institute's network data stores have grown 50-fold in the past five years alone. The storage infrastructure now comprises more than 10 petabytes of network-attached storage and a large storage-area network supporting almost 50 Oracle database instances as well as a number of MySQL and other RDBMS systems. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY Responsibilities of this role fall into three areas: Delivery of data services . As lead of the service center providing data storage and related services, help drive the successful establishment of this new internal business . Continually review and refine data service offerings and coordinate with Cost Analysis and Business Systems groups in the development of associated cost-recovery models . Maintain ongoing engagement with Broad research community to ensure satisfaction with service offerings and service delivery . Play a driving role in the ongoing identification and evaluation of new storage and database technologies Storage and database operations . Ensure effective and reliable operation of the storage and data infrastructure . Manage support and service contracts and coordinate with vendor field service staff as required . Collect metrics of storage service availability and performance . Implement appropriate configuration change management and documentation procedures . Plan and implement appropriate hardware life cycle management practices Team leadership . Manage storage administration and database engineering teams for maximum performance . Ensure appropriate cross training on storage and database technologies within the teams to maintain reliable coverage . Develop and maintain a professional development plan with each team member . Bachelor's degree in computer science or other technical discipline and plus 7-10 years of directly related professional experience including 3-5 years in supervisory roles with increasing responsibility; Master's degree preferred . Solid understanding of SAN and NAS technologies . Working knowledge of RDBMS technologies including Oracle and MySQL . Strong customer service orientation . Familiarity with delivering IT services in an academic or scientific research organization highly desired . Excellent leadership and exceptional verbal and written communication skills . That support includes some general laptop support -- mostly Macs, with a few Linux and Windows clients in the mix -- telephony, mobile computing, printing and the like. Our numbers are small but expected to grow rapidly in the coming year. Right now IT is a one-person shop, but can be expected to expand beyond that soon. Our server room and infrastructure is dominated by open source Linux software and you should be well experienced in managing the same, as well as willing to learn new stuff as the need arises. The IT manager would also help with general infrastructure planning and budgeting, and be a integral part of the growth and increased stability of our general computing operations. The position reports to the COO/CFO. Some off-hours support may be necessary, though there is no 24 hour pager duty. The job requires good communication skills, a willingness to learn and support exotic new computation techniques, and a good "bedside manner" with users who have widely varying levels of computing expertise.
