**THIS IS A TEMPORARY, 6 MONTH CONTRACT POSITION**

The Broad Institute or Harvard and MIT is seeking a Senior Systems 
Administrator to take technical ownership of its 1,000 node compute farm.

The Broad Institute is redefining the boundaries of science and medicine  with an interdisciplinary model designed to meet today's most critical  biomedical challenges.

At the Broad we are developing the new tools that will  enable scientists to begin unlocking the mysteries of genomics.  

  

  The Broad Research IT infrastructure comprises a 4000-core computing

  cluster, several hundred application and compute servers---both physical

  and virtual---and a NAS environment hosting more than 4PB of data.

  Spanning three physical data centers, this infrastructure supports an

  active research community of more than 1000 people.

REQUIREMENTS

* Candidate should have prior experience managing large scale 
infrastructures where automation is key. Cfengine (version 3) experience 
is a big plus.

* Expert understanding of all dimensions of the Linux (RHEL / CentOS) 
operating system. A candidate must be able to speak comfortably about 
network services (NTP, DHCP, DNS), file systems, firewalls (iptables), 
kernels (stock and custom compiled), and service management.

* Expert understanding of network (LAN routing, subnets) and file 
storage technologies including NFS, SAN, CIFS.

* Scripting / programming skills are a must. Bash scripting is a 
minimum, perl or python desirable.

* Understanding of SQL database systems and concepts.

* Knowledge of VMWARE a plus.

* Diagnostic / debugging skills including use of strace, gdb, and tcpdump.

* Must be able to communicate effectively with technical and 
non-technical audiences.

* Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a 
team environment

* Excellent time management and organizational skills


OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Administers computing and/or data storage hardware supporting IT 
services at the Broad. Responds to requests for support, explains IT 
concepts and policies, and follows established IT procedures.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

.Install, provision and deploy new computing hardware and associated 
software
.Participate in implementation of new infrastructure projects
.Monitor systems for normal operation, security, performance and success 
of backups
.Automate routine repeated tasks through scripting or other means
.Assist in the development and delivery of user documentation and/or 
training
.Document administrative procedures and issue resolutions
.Perform off-hours work as required to accommodate production 
requirements or respond to high-priority service requests
.Other tasks as required
