Via Science is looking for a mid-level (SAGE IIIish) IT Manager & sysadmin, to manage and support a small, but diverse and growing IT environment. Via Science is the parent of a group of companies engaged in high performance computing analysis of large datasets. We use a common software & technology base to solve a variety of problems in diverse fields, including financial trading, healthcare, drug & biological discovery, and business analytics; we may also expand into additional areas of inquiry.

The IT manager will be the primary support for around 30 FTEs with a wide variety of computing needs. That support includes some general laptop support — we're mostly Macs, with a few Linux and Windows clients in the mix — telephony, mobile computing, printing and the like.

In the server room, it includes support for networking (Cisco and Linux-based router/firewalls, an OpenVPN server, a relatively simply wireless network), the HPC compute cluster, which runs Ubuntu Linux and Sun/Oracle Grid Engine on a number of compute nodes, and OpenSolaris and ZFS for storage. We have a small smattering of other services (wikis, subversion, some databases). We also contract for CPU cycles with external providers, and have some interest in HPC cloud computing once the economics make sense for us. Our server room and infrastructure is dominated by open source Linux software and you should be well experienced in managing the same, as well as willing to learn new stuff as the need arises.

The IT manager would also help with general infrastructure planning and budgeting, and be a integral part of the growth and increased stability of our general computing operations. The position reports to the Director of Operations, who is the current IT manager, and is going to be directly involved in IT about half the time, meaning that 1) you'll be managed by another sysadmin who is intimately familiar with the trials and tribulations of the job and the particulars of our environment 2) you won't be alone when things are hectic and 3) there is room for advancement and growth at Via Science for system administrators.

Some off-hours support may be necessary, though there is currently no 24 hour pager rotation. The job requires good communication skills, a willingness to learn and support new computation techniques, and a good "bedside manner" with users who have widely varying levels of computing expertise. You won't have any direct reports; the "manager" role refers to IT itself, not staff. This may change as we grow.

General requirements:

- around 3-6 years experience as a sysadmin or equivalent job

- Deep familiarity with at least one Unix variant

- Experience with networking & VPNs, especially Cisco ASA devices

- Ability to deal with basic problems on Macs, Windows & smartphones.

- Able to lift 50lbs
