This position entails supporting a large public-facing database
infrastructure with extremely high transaction frequency. The core
database serves 3M+ end users in over 100 countries, in 6 languages and
in all time zones. Skill sets required include being proficient in SQL
code development, database infrastructure architecture and also
operational support. The position reports to the Database Team Manager.

This is an on-site, full time position. No contractors or off-shore
candidates will be considered.

Essential duties include...

* Support team of PHP developers in crafting clean, efficient & scalable
SQL code (stored procedures, triggers and in-line SQL);
* Analyze db performance, with an eye towards areas of improvement.
(code reviews, data sharding, storage engine decisions);
* Contribute to new feature design by designing schema and writing
stored procedures;
* Develop data cleanup/archiving scripts;
* Maintain & monitor DB uptime/performance monitoring tools;
* Engineer backup/recovery strategies and associated scripts;
* Assure replication integrity (20+ slave environment), and create new
slaves as needed;
* Configure DB hardware for maximum resource utilization. Manage DB
configurations accordingly;
* Capacity planning;
* Sustain "three 9s" (.999%) up-time goal;
* Assure high-availability to 2 Million+ web users daily (60,000+
simultaneously). Support tens of millions of transactions per hour;
* Assist with rotating on-call support (1 out of every 8 weeks);
* Scan web logs database error logs. Diagnose root causes of DB
performance issues.

Education and Training Requirements...

* BS or BA degree preferred;
* At least 3 years of experience with high volume, high availability
database environment;
* Experience with MySQL high desired.

Skills and Competencies...

* Team player to join experienced DB team. No "lone wolves" needed here;
* Expert level database management and administration skills;
* Experience developing database (code & schema) for scalable
applications (ideally public-facing PHP web applications);
* Experience maintaining large multi-server DB environments, including
administration, troubleshooting and performance tuning;
* Comfort level with needing to be reachable 24/7 for website
emergencies;
* MySQL experience highly desired;
* Other database (MS SQL, PostgreSQL etc) experience also considered for
excellent candidates who are able to work hard and learn quickly.
