Team Leader, Research Computing Operations (Contract Position)

Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, Cambridge MA

The Broad Institute is redefining the boundaries of science and medicine

The Broad Research IT infrastructure comprises a 4000-core computing 
cluster, several hundred application and compute servers---both physical 
and virtual---and a NAS environment hosting more than 4PB of data. 
Spanning three physical data centers, this infrastructure supports an 
active research community of more than 1000 people.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Under the direction of the Manager of Research Computing and working 
with other members of the IT Department, the Team Leader, Research 
Computing operations leads a team of systems and storage administrators 
responsible for key operational aspects of the research computing 
infrastructure, including Unix and Linux servers, and SAN and NAS 
storage and backup platforms, This is a leadership role requiring a 
strong technical background in related fields, a proven ability to 
project manage complex implementations, and the ability to supervise 
technicians and team leaders. The key focus of this role is to 
coordinate with Broad Research and Administrative Computing groups and 
outside partners to develop and maintain resources to support the 
computing infrastructure needs of the Institute. An ability to clearly 
communicate and document the details of the infrastructure to other 
staff is essential.
 
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

o    Oversee the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of 
appropriate computational and data storage platforms to meet the 
scientific needs of the Institute
o    Manage a team of Unix systems administrators responsible for 
installing and maintaining server operating systems and core 
applications, including the operation of the LSF-based compute farm
o    Provide and manage reliable data backup and archiving services 
based on industry best-practices utilizing both local and off-site resources
o    Coordinate projects to ensure changes do not conflict with the 
overall IT Department plan or routine daily Institute operations
o    Ensure timely response and appropriate escalation of all 
operational issues
o    Create and test data recovery, disaster recovery and business 
continuity plans to reduce the impact of interruption scenarios
o    Continually monitor resource utilization, and report statistics and 
trends
o    Diagnose failures and resolve any problems in a timely manner
o    Share 24x7 on-call support for all operational emergencies
o    Other responsibilities as required

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 7 Systems Administrators.

QUALIFICATIONS
o    5-8 years of related experience
o    Degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems with a 
strong leadership and project management background, or equivalent 
training and experience; industry training towards Certification in 
Technical Discipline strongly desired
o    Demonstrated ability to lead a team of technical staff
o    Experience with enterprise scale data storage, backup systems, 
disaster recovery and business continuity planning
o    Strong oral and written communication
o    Effective organizational skills
o    Ability to work professionally in a demanding production oriented 
environment
