Hello,

Our client is located just outside of downtown Boston.

 

The job description mentions MySQL several times, but is no longer part of
this requirement.  The client has roughly 70 HP and DELL servers running
RedHat Enterprise 3.0 and 4.0.  This group supports the critical business
applications for this company and this candidate will be the "go to" person
for Linux knowledge.  There will be a combination of new project work,
including design and system builds and support of the current
infrastructure.   

 

Job Details: 

The Linux Administrator is responsible for optimizing and supporting the
client's Linux based servers and the applications running on these systems.
As MySQL is heavily used on the client's Linux system, the person will also
be responsible for managing MySQL together with our DBA team. Performs OS
and MySQL database administration and both HW level and OS level performance
tuning and optimization. Ensures high performance and high availability of
the company's Linux based systems. Provides technical advice and
consultation with systems analysis, application design and application
deployment. Maintains several Linux based servers including Linux based
MySQL Servers.  Composes and maintains administrative procedures for
maintaining the Linux based servers.

 



DUTIES

Day to day responsibility for operation, backup and disaster recovery
management of The client's Linux based servers, including Linux based MySQL
based databases including performance management of the HW, OS, database
systems, the database software and other software running on the servers.

Support the client application developers with development, deployment and
day to day support of both internal development applications as well as
purchased applications in use by The client

Monitor the Linux based servers and the server environment to make sure the
applications running on the servers do not adversely affect production
operations.

Maintain corporately managed IT systems to make sure they are in line with
current security policies, anti virus policies and have installed and
enabled the best available protection systems to avoid unauthorized access
to the systems

the hardware and software asset register is up to date

Responsibilities:  

*	Resolve any requests in a timely and efficient manner, with as
little impact on production as possible 
*	Ensure that systems are running efficiently with minimal downtime or
interruption to production 
*	Through planning and understanding of our corporate business
requirements, ensure that computer and communication systems have sufficient
capacity to meet the current and future business needs 
*	Monitor and reduce IT related costs where possible. 
*	Guarantee systems are secure from both external and internal sources
and adhere to corporate policy for firewall, backups and anti-virus
protection at all times. 
*	Participate and sometimes manage global IT projects and make sure
that the projects succeed in delivering promised deliverables on time and on
budget 
*	Day to day responsibility for operation, backup and disaster
recovery management of the client's Linux based servers including Linux
based MySQL databases. This includes performance management and tuning of
the servers, the database software and other software running on the
servers. 
*	Support the client Corporate IT team with database development
support and support for applications hosted and managed by The client
Corporate IT 
*	Support the client application developers covering 
- Linux server and database design and  architecture
- Linux server and database configuration
- Linux  server and database monitoring 
- application, database and server tuning and optimizations 
*	Write and optimize scripts to optimize, manage and monitor the Linux
based servers. 
*	Perform data analysis, database design and data normalization advice
to management 
*	Perform server, OS, database and development support, configuration
changes and implementation of customized features for database applications
and other applications running on the server 
*	Participate on development team for development of client server
applications and participate in deployment teams for deploying applications,
including participate in planning and execution of client server
applications to meet local business requirements 
*	Provide accurate and timely status updates to management and project
sponsors 
*	Acts as point of contact on Linux OS, HW, database issues with
internal and/or external resources 
*	Monitor error log(s), database and log space, user activity and
resource utilization of production environment.  Work with application
programmers to insure that application problems do not adversely affect
production operations. 
*	Provide after hours on-call support for critical database issues. 
*	Keep up to date with future technology changes

Qualifications/Skills:  

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Technology or equivalent degree and
relevant work experience is required

 

The person must have both theoretical expertise and at least 5 years
practical experience with a proven track record from the following work
areas

*	Designing, developing and manipulating MySQL Server databases 
*	Configuring, implementing and supporting high availability
strategies with Linux based servers running MySQL and other Linux based
applications 
*	Creation, support and management of Stored Procedures and SQL Coding

*	Performance Tuning of Linux based servers, databases and
applications 
*	Database Design & Architecture including data/Schema modeling for
complex logical database designs and relational database concepts
(normalization etc) 
*	Proactive monitoring and ability to identify, troubleshoot and
resolve real-time Linux OS and HW systems issues 
*	Management of database maintenance activities including Backups,
index re-orgs, integrity, and consistency checks 
*	Experience in large scale databases with high transaction rates 
*	Script programming using programming tools like Visual Basic, PHP,
Perl etc 
*	Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills 
*	Red Hat Linux Enterprise, SUSE Linux Enterprise, MySQL version 4 and
5 

*         Relevant technical qualifications and other IT certifications

*         Fluent in English

 

 

The person must be a self-starter, highly organized and detail-oriented, and
highly motivated to take the initiative to resolve problems and propose
possible alternative solutions. The person must have the ability to manage
multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workflow, and work with other team
members, developers, and operations staff.

 

Desired Skills (not required)

*	Knowledge and experience from Java programming and/or Visual C++
programming 
*	Knowledge and experience from Oracle database administration and
development 
*	Good knowledge of hardware systems, SAN systems, RAID and disk
subsystems as it applies to SQL Server systems 

 

Good understanding of and familiarity with 

*         Anti-virus software (e.g. NAI Total Virus Defense, Symantec
AntiVirus, Trend Microsystems Anti-Virus etc.)

*         Directory services

*         Monitoring of IT systems and management and implementation of SLAs


*         Different hardware platforms and solutions for application
execution, storage and management systems

*         Fail over and load balancing solutions
