Verisign's Managed Security Services unit in Providence, RI, has an
opening for a senior UNIX systems administrator.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for any UNIX admin who
possesses senior level experience in UNIX systems administration and who

Responsibilities:
The Production Operations group at VeriSign is an internal group
responsible for the administration of our customer facing systems
running VeriSign's Security Services. We are looking for enthusiastic
administrators to join our team to provide technical support for an
array of applications and hardware. You will be responsible for
responding to support escalations, troubleshooting technical problems,
and resolving data/configuration issues. In addition, Production
Operations is responsible for all aspects of the administration of our
production data center computers, including building, deploying, and day
to day maintenance of the systems. This position requires a keen
interest in understanding the application code base and underlying
systems infrastructure. You work closely with senior systems
administrators and engineers, Application Deployment, Sustaining
Engineering, Networking, QA, and Development to resolve problems and
prioritize bug fixes. You should be comfortable with multi-tasking,
handling interrupts, and working with various technical users.
Exceptional problem solving skills, tenacity, a sense of ownership and
pride in your work, and strong customer focus are essential for your
success in this position.

As an Engineer III, you will be assigned projects and lead initiatives
related to system deployments and product rollouts. You will plan
project steps and milestones given a set of requirements and parameters
and will be expected to meet those deadlines. This includes keeping
management apprised of the project status from project initiation to
project closure. Or you may work with other technical team members,
under the direction of a project manager, collectively driving towards
successful completion of the project.

The environments you'll be helping administer may offer many challenging
opportunities in managing large data sets (SAN, NAS, etc.), blade server
architecture, virtualized servers, etc. We're seeking a self-motivated
team player who brings a strong desire to learn the technologies which
are new them and lead others in those which they are already well
versed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform Tier I and Tier II support activities of VeriSign's Managed
Security Services (MSS) applications. Manage and document all work
through appropriate work request ticketing system and change control
systems. 
- Perform system administration and trouble-shooting activities on the
following OS platforms: Linux Advanced Server 3.0, Fedora Core, Sun
Solaris 2.8, AIX, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows 2003.
- Perform system administration and trouble-shooting activities for
various web related applications such as Apache, Jakarta Tomcat, etc.
- Develop strong understanding of VeriSign's MSS application code base
and the underlying infrastructure supporting the delivery of the
service. Use this knowledge to identify bugs, single-point of failures,
and service availability issues, working with appropriate teams to
correct deficiencies.
- In the event of a service disruption, perform all administrative
functions to isolate and correct the problem. This includes performing
all stop/start and redirect functions on web servers and application
servers to restore service availability. 
- Perform proper escalation of service issues to next level technical
support using appropriate methods and tools within the designated
timeframes. Include notification to appropriate support organizations
and management within correct timeframe.
- Write clear and concise outage report(s) within 4 hours of resolving a
service impacting outage. Coordinate with internal and external
resources the completion of the report which includes: customer impact,
engineering analysis, and overall impact to weekly service availability.
- Complete and submit weekly staff report to Operations Manager.
- Monitor and ensure successful completion of tape back-up jobs.
Maintain tapes, tape libraries, and on/offsite documentation per policy
and procedures. 
- As assigned by manager, support special projects and tasks as
required. 
- Provide input to manager on issues associated with system and
application architecture as well as customer service issues to improve
overall processes in managing the environment. 
- Participate in the 'on-call' pager rotation
- Required to participate in bi-weekly maintenance windows as requested
by management.

Requirements:
- BS degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work
experience in the field.
- In depth knowledge of Unix (preferably Linux), networking, and shell
scripting
- Solid network fundamentals, including TCP/IP routing, interface
management, service configuration, paging and swapping, inter-process
communication, filesystem concepts ("inode", "superblock ").
- Strongly desire and current experience in administering SAN
environments (Brocade, EMC, etc.) and/or virtualized server environments
( VMWare ESX)
- 4 - 6 years working in a application/technical support organization
- Work within following Shell environments: bash, csh, ksh
- Knowledge of Perl scripting
- Experience with SSH, FTP, SFTP, HTTP, HTTPS, Sendmail, SNMP, and DNS
- Hardware Experience: Sun V series and IBM X and P series server
families.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as oral and
written skills.
- Ability to acquire and maintain trusted employee status
- Must be US Citizen
